2025 PINØT NØIR.

BECAUSE, WE CRUSHED IT.

Ironbank Pinot and grapes with a meat grinder.

A funny thing happened on the way from the vineyard…

We got dumped.

Well, it wasn’t that funny at the time, tbh. But, it turned out for the best.

A warm shout-out to the winery that early up in the year confirmed a high-octane enthusiastic order for our entire Pinøt vintage. We agree, it was looking great, our best yet by all accounts (ours and yours).

A less cordial howdy to you guys, however, for letting us sink all the production costs into the vines last year, only to cancel as the nets went on (the second last, second biggest cost of the season), because “you got something cheaper somewhere else”.

Whatever. You know who you are.

Anyway, our gain, because in discussions with our Cabernøt winemaker, we all agreed, we couldn’t let this one die.

So we made it ourselves. And, it’s a cracker.

Tracey’s hands say the season was nuts, from super-wet to super-hot, with long ripening at the end giving the fruit time to really establish its voice.

We all reckon We Know Nothing*, but feel we can taste that slow-bake structure. Like the proper, real bronzing you get from a long summer holiday, as opposed to slapping on paper underwear for a quick orange spray in a robot booth at 4 in the morning. You’re welcome for that mental picture you now can’t unsee.

We took a swing on this wine, and we couldn’t be more delighted (um, relieved) at how it’s come up.

If you, like Miles in that iconic film Sideways, believe that pinot can be ‘haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle”, maybe you’ll love this wine as much as we do.

And if you’ve made better lifestyle choices than he, maybe you’ve got a table around which to gather with great food and gorgeous friends, and then the only thing missing will be a little bit of Ironbank Pinøt.

A tightly structured wine, medium in weight on the palate and chockful of bright plummy notes along with aromas of strawberry, cherry, violets - and a hint of thyme, no less - are just a webclick away.

Let’s get into it. Be brave, dig in, enjoy xøxø

TASTING NOTES

2025 ADELAIDE HILLS

PINØT NØIR

PINØT NØIR | IRONBANK | SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Ironbank Pinot Noir wine bottle
  • This is a medium weight pinot, with a tight structure.

Complex and evocative, it fills the glass with rich, fruity, herbaceous aromas.

  • NOSE | Aromas of strawberry, cherry, violets, and plum. There is also a hint of thyme in there somewhere

PALATE | Chock full of bright plum notes ending with a tight structure and stalk tannin complexity.

  • The season’s offered very good production conditions.

Dryer than the previous four seasons, with low disease pressure due to lack of late growing season rainfall (Jan to March), all picking dates were dry and dusty resulting in excellent fruit.

  • The 5 hectares of north-facing slopes at Ironbank in the Adelaide hills are surrounded by mature bushland of stringybark and cup gums.

At altitudes of around 410m at the highest points, and catching fresh gully breezes, Ironbank’s cool climate conditions are ideal for grape production.

The Irønbank vines were planted into shallow top soil and a base of clay in the early 90’s.

Single cordon, terraced, and spur pruned annually by hand, these family-owned vines are a part of daily family life at Irønbank, carefully and constantly curated for quality at every stage of every season.

  • The vineyard is overlooked by Robin & Tracey’s architectural eco-residence, a strong and thoughtful architectural building of timbers and glass. In keeping with the overarching philosophy of the property, the residence operates offgrid for water and generates its own electricity, and has been built to passive-solar standards featuring repurposed materials salvaged around the site. It enjoying expansive views across the vines and adjacent forest, fields and truffle orchard.

The Irønbank team’s wine-making philosophy and approach is light on intervention whilst consistent on touch. All practicable work is by hand, cane prunings are remulched to build organic matter in soil.

  • HARVESTED | 6-3-25

PROCESSED | The pinot was split into 3 fermenters. Each Fermenter had 30% whole bunch added to the bottom of the fermenter and the balance of fruit was de-stemmed on top.

The first fermenter was fermented cool, to preserve primary fruit. Footstomped at 1 Be.

The second fermenter was fermented warm to build fruit complexity. Footstomped at 1 Be.

The 3rd fermenter was fermented and then sealed so that it spent an extra 2 weeks on skins to build structure.

The wine has mainly been stored in tank with a small amount in French Oak.

    QUANTITY | 816 750ml bottles

VINEYARD | Single vineyard, Ironbank, Adelaide Hills, South Australia

CELLAR | Will reward careful cellaring

    ALCOHOL | 14.2%

Congrat- u Farrking- lations… it is just stunning, smooth for a baby with this phenomenal depth of flavour and you didn’t miss in the alcohol content either!
— Andy
It shows what cabernet can be with a cooler Hills environment, judging from the acidity, a longer ripening period.
Congratulations on your first vintage
— Frank

It’s smooth and very easy to drink. Lovely on the nose and subtle enough to go with ceviche and light seafoods. Lovely.

“It’s a very approachable, easy drinking medium red that you can drink with or without food. I imagine you could pop this on ice in summer to drink in the sun or just as happily by the fire.
— Frank
It’s official - my wife likes the vino!
